Would it be possible to use the innards from a small freezer unit? I'm thinking pulling the exchange, pump and other guts out of a small chest freezer we have and knocking something up. I can buy one second hand for quite cheap (maybe free)

I think it doesn't work - as the compressors used in fridges etc. work with a different pressure. The pressure in a single stage is much higher - if I remember it correctly.
I know people though who bench their stuff with air cooling - in a freezer That works splendidly. Only thing you should consider is that heatpipes dont work at -25C any more

Really small units usually are to weak to cope with 400+W CPU or 500-800W GPU heatloads....
